HATAITAI SCHOOL

Mr. H. K. Searle presided over the monthly meeting- of the Hataitai School Committee on Thursday evening, those present being Messrs. Combs, Cameron, Cook, Brabin, Gayfdrd, and Wilson. The headmaster (Mr. Robertson) was also present, and stated that the. school had reopened and everything' was working smoothly with the exception of Standards 1 and 2, which were working in the one room. The committee considered that this overshadowed all other school matters in importance, and spent some time' in discussing it. The chairman said it was a scandal that almost 90 children were occupying this one room' and two teachers were endeavouring to do justice to the children under them, 'fhe .worst 'feature of this state of. affaii-B was that one class (Standard 2) worked under the same distressing conditions all last year, and it was not fair to :the ■• children, Another point brought up was -the fact that it was too big a strain on the two teachers.. One teacher had 'lost'"several .days last year because -of ' this . strain,' and, incidentally lost her remuneration as well. It was the unanimous opinion of the committee that tbis'state of affairs could not go on much longer, and with a view to having ;t remedied, it was decided' to write ask- ! n 5 the Education Board to receive a deputation; at its next meeting,- when the whole', situation could be placed before the- board. ilie school picnic, which had to be postponed from last year, will now b.e held at JJays Bay towards, the end of the month. A vote of thanks was passed.to thestaff tor its efforts in connection with the production of the school concerts,'-all -being, agreed, that it reflected srreat credit on'tho teaching staff. ''. . ■ ' . . • Important, business in connection with the filling in of the school grounds was discussed, and it is hoped that something definite, will be .done in the neat future \o inalie &a grounds what they sliottld he.
