FIREBLIGHT DISEASE
APPEARS IN SOUTH ISLAND

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Fireblight has appeared in the South Island. Mr. L. Paynter, orchard instructor, made the discovery while motoring back to Christehurca from a visit to Nelson. He found' a badly-infected hawthorn hedge north of Kaikoura, and he forwarded specimens to headquarters at Wellington. Late yesterday Mr. Paynter received a telegram to say that the disease was certainly fireblight.
