The races at Randwiek, the regatta on tho harbour, the Shield cricket match, and tho bowls championship attracted many people, and the holiday resorts were crowded. Thunderstorms in many parts of the State, and gales following, uprooted trees, blocked roads, and interrupted •telephone' communication. The Albury district suffered particularly in this respect. Somo rain fell, helping to quell the scrub fires, but much more is needed. Tho shortage of water in many places is acute, and at Portland an epidemic of gastritis among children is causing concern. Ten botween the ages of five and ten months died in a week.
