AT TRENTHAM

SOME DISASTROUS DEFEATS

CLUB MAKES GOOD RECOVERY

Features of the racing at Trentham on Saturday were the complete recovery of the totalisator returns, the defeat of one or two so-called certainties, and the City Handicap. Certainly from the point of view of weather, the Wellington Racing Club could not have had a better day, for the rain of the previous day had simply improved the track and the bright conditions attracted another huge attendance. The club's patrons betted to such a good degree that not only was the £11,000 deficiency in the totalisator turnover of the two early days more than made good, but the total for the meeting £194,507 10s ,was £861 10s better than the total of twelve months ago. The total for the flay was £70,306 10s, as against £58,414 last year when the concluding day was ion a Wednesday.

There is no need here to recapitulate in detail the) good work of all the executive officers of the club. The whole meeting .went with a swing from beginning to end, and it is sufficient to say that the working Jvas of the typical Trentham standard.

After running two solid races over a mile ami a half and a mile and. three furJonga Royal Saxon was produced again to beat a very smart field of milers in the Summer Handicap, and he did his job like a tradesman. White Pang atoned for a number of disappointing displays by .■winning the Consolation Handicap from ;the again unlucky Historic. Cimabue won ft sprint event at last, not being really seriously troubled in the City- Handicap. The Southern lightweight, L. J. Ellis, ■was in good form, winning on Paris, Royal Saxon, and Arikinui. WALLACEVILLE HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Quarterdeck suited by the easier track Tan an improved race. Hers was a meritorious performance, and her backers must have given up hope when, with Pale Star, she dwelt at barrier-rise and gave her field a good start. She gradually worked her Tvay up to a handy position at the turn and although she bored out all the way down the straight, she was able to hold off Mister_ Gamp. She gave Sir George Clifford his second success at the meetjntr.

Mister Gamp was a trifle unlucky for ißbout two furlongs" from home he collided >-ith Quarterdeck, receiving all the worst 'of it and had to be steadied. He then came on the outside of her and was carried out all the way. Had he been able to tome on straight, he would have won.

Airtight and Zeuxis both ran fine races 'again and Zenxis should soon pick up a stake in the South. Elicit was a trifle unlucky and met with some trouble in the middle stages, but it is doubtful if he would have won. Imarosebud was beaten by her rise in weight, and probably would have done better over a slightly longer journey. Arrowy and General Wai showed some pace but not much can be said for the others.

KELBURN HANDICAP. Paris was quietly awaited by quite a few people who noticed his fifth on the first day to Millais, and those who had noted the fact that Latin Quarter, who liad finished third in the Douro Cup, was .withdrawn in favour of Paris. When L. »T. Kllis was hoisted a* the rider, that removed further doubt. Paris, a useful looking gelding by Solferino, owned by Mr. ■W. '.P. Haziett, of Invercargill, was soon in front.and always going like a winner. He had .lfilosol benteri a furlong from home, and when Stanchion threatened Itillm fumbled with his reins and whip, but Paris was going too well and got home by a narrow margin. The three-year-old Stanchion was far from disgraced in-al-most defeating such a. solid six-year-old with 121b the worst of the weights. JKilosol 7-an well enough to suggest possibilities for him at the Duncdin Meeting. Briar Root finished on well into fourth place. Rabbi ran an improving race. Moutoa AVonder was always well back, and Swoopalong performed very' disappointingly, always being near the tail and labouring too. HOPEFUL STAKES. Night Lad showed himself a sturdy youngster, for he was saddled up for the third time at the meeting, and with a great finish ing -effort came on to beat Equitant, to whom ho gave a good start over the last furlong. Night Lad is a game looking customer and true to label. He is owned ami trained by the popular Southerner, .P. T. Hogau, and is one of the useful Night Kaids, a horse whose stock are coining well to the fore and earning a reJnifatifm.for solidity.

Kqmtant quite: reproduced her second •lay form when she beat all but Gay Ballerina. Slit; is an improved filly. Eran<;olin again showed plenty of pace and stuck on into third place. Experience and tracing condition stood to her.

As expected, B. IT. Slon-is was put up on OJcnartney at ll'/zlb overweight. He kept the chestnut on tho course. Glenartney began from No. 21, but his pace soon took him over to the rails, and he was a winner at half a mile. Ho then weakened, but it was a satisfactory effort, and his turn for a win should come along very soon.

Best Friend, after missing the jump-out, [was running on in fifth place. Aspiring, ;who has not done a great deal of galloping latterly, showed her pace, but faded out over the last furlong. Hers was quite » good effort under tho circumstances.

Clever and Royal Flyer were never projmnent, and Cuticle failed to begin smartly enough to have a chance. Admiral Brake was again finishing on as if he will get a distance well later on. 'Koyal Line was not noticpd, and of the lightweights J)x Dono showed the most pace early.

MELROSE HANDICAP. Roi dc Va? ran liis best race to date, 'even though the field was not a strong one. Jfe tool; a time to settle down, but finished Troll. TJnyal Lineage on the rails ran a much-improved rr.ee, and one that suggests a bracket very soon. Singer was always near the front, and ran an encouraging lace in his new colours, those of Bright Glow. Alholspear failed to begin smartly enough, and Kcp.iy did well to reach third place from the place she held in the early part. Wine Tray and Projection showed pace to the turn. Kinross rather disappointed, and Shrewd did not run so well as expected. SUMMER HANDICAP. 'Vivi'.l Savin was ridden in behind, as „, ■ Iti [:,.. |,v lie- employed mi the first ,-;'■ ',■. ;j:| '<'.:■■■;?. ivhi.'n )■<; tried to win long- ,. .'■-• ivj ' iv.eew all Iho wiy. His kw.diius, run as a eonsciiueucc was much > J

too good for the opposition. Full Feather also was given plenty of time _ to settle down, with the result that he finished at a great rate on the rails and was going it anything faster than the winner at the end.

Toxeuma ran another of his good but unlucky races. Always well placed, he had the leading bunch beaten about a furJong from home, but failed to hold on the dividend payers. He has raced _ very consistently lately and has been in minor places in firet-clas.s handicaps behind liorses'whose form is of top class. Joy King was going so well at the end of six furlongs that he looked a possibility. He did not finish at all generously, however. At the same time he will have to bo seriously considered in any race he contests from now on, for lie is essentially a late summer and autumn horse.

Nightmarch lost ground at the start, and then was wide out all" the way round tlfc turn. He did not muster up any dash and altogether his display was below par. Set Sail failed just when it was expected she would shine, at the business end. She was going very nicely in front for six and a half furlongs. Doree looked a trifle burly and ran accordingly. Gold Cure, as is usual, found his promotion to open company too much, but the Nolan Cup next Thursday will see him with plenty of friends. Town Bank was sore, and Kilbronsyth was never a possibility. CONSOLATION HANDICAP. White Fang appears to be at his best at a mile and a quarter. Ho has a good deal of pace, and as he won his race by holding the lead over the last half-mil'; and beating off all-comers he must* bo credited with a good effort. Historic received a good run on the rails to the tutu and then appeared to get into some scrimmaging. He is an awkward customer at the best of times, but a good galloper when he receives a clear run.

Battle Colours hung on well into third place after being also in the melee. Sir Roy, after being tailed off early, rattled on into fourth place, a big improvement on second day form.. Royal Game, who 'appeared to be moving short in his preliminary) surprised by getting fifth place. Joy Bird failed to run on, and Blimp was a big disappointment to many, for he appeared to hold a winning chance at the turn only to drop right out in the run home.

Talisker'was never in a winning position, and Anolo and Papatu were hopelessly placed, even with a mile to go. Concentrate raced a little better, but still liung out, and apparently the constant changes to right and left-handed courses to which be has been subjected lately has upset him temporarily. He has not shown his real form at Trentham. CITY HANDICAP. Cimabue, jumping away smartly with Meadow Lark slow to move, and Gascony checked for some reason before they ■ reached the course proper, was not troubled to win easily. He raced below form on the second day, but on Saturday reproduced his first day's dash.

Owing to the hard tracks Gascony had not done a great deal of work, and it was feared his condition might not be quite up to concert pitch. In addition he appeared to have to be checked early in the race with the result that he attempted to give Cimabue a break over the last two furlongs, and was not equal to the task.

Sudden Storm, having her second race since the last Great Easter Handicap, finished on very well into third place. The sister of Childsplay should not be long in winning a short distance event in the South.: Arrow Lad did rather better than earlier at the meeting. Miss Pat was by no means disgraced, and Money Mine showed, plenty of pace. Meadow Lark lost all chance by failing to jump out with his field. KAITOKE HANDICAP. The Chief Ruler—Celmisia three-year-old Arikimii showed' exceptional brilliancy to win from No. 17, for on the rails were smart hacks like Quantum, Gold Dawn, and Knightlike, yet he headed them off and beat them home decisively. He has always been regarded as a smart galloper over a short course, but this was his best effort, to date, and one that suggests better things. • His dam was a really good galloper.

Propaganda, the runner-up,.was given as a five-year-old gelding by Starstream from Miss Kelly. He was not by any means neglected on the totalisator, and was better backed than a number of others with public form. He is trained at Levin, and this appeared to be his first outing. He made thus a somewhat sensational turf

debut, and niany people wondered where he has been in his earlier years. Quantum showed plenty of pace, but lie and Gold Dawn were beaten by their weight at the finish. Royal Duke ran a fine race with his 9.S from No, 22 at the barrier to finish a good fourth. Great Star, Clarendon, and Sea Raid all finished well up. Lucky Bag did very well for half a mile, and then faded out. CONCLUDING EVENTS. Following are the descriptions of the races decided after Saturday's 'Post" went to press:— . i ROYAL SAXON WINS. . Historic was scratched at 12.25 p.m., and White Fang at 12.35 p.m. for the Summer Handicap. Night March and Full Feather were both slow away, and Set Sail soon ran to the front to lead round the top, and to the turn from Doree, s Toxeuma, and Gold Cure, with Night March and Joy King next, and then Full Feather. Toxouma had collared Set Sail at the false mil, and was hanging on to the lead until Koyal Saxon came through in the centre, and Full Feather oij the rails. Koyal Saxon beat Full Feather horiic by half a length with Toxeuma a length back third. Joy King was right up fourth, and Night March, Set Sail, and Doree finished in that order. WHITE FANG BEATS HISTORIC. Historic was a very hot favourite for the Consolation Handicap, with Talisker also solidly supported. Sir Roy, Papatu, and Anolo received the worst of the start, and Joy Bird, Concentrate, and Blimp led out of the straight from Battle Colours, White Fang, Historic, and Talisker. Joy Bird and Blimp led down the back from Battle Colours, Concentrate, Historic, White Fang, Talisker, and Koyal Game. White Fang.took charge half a mile from home from Joy Bird, Battle Colours, Blimp, Historic, -and 'Concentrate. Historic made a fast run down the straight, but failed by a head to reach White Fang. Battle Colours was a length back third., and Sir Roy, Royal Game, Talisker, and Concentrate were next. CIMABUE AT LAST. Gascony was at decided odds-ou with Cimabue at a great price to win the City Handicap. Meadow Lark was slow away from the barrier, and Cimabue, Miss Pat, and Gascony began best. Cimabue, Miss Pat, Money Mine, and Gascony led on to the course proper with Sudden Storm on the rails. Cimabue always held the position safe, and Gascony, hard ridden, failed to get within two lengths of him. Sudden Storm, finishing on, was half a lengta back, and .then came Arrow Lad, Miss Pat, and Money Mine.

A SOLID PERFORMANCE. . There was the customary big pool on the concluding event, the total being tho neat ■ £12,000.' Quantum, Knightlike, Great Star, Just Nell, and Arikinui were all very heavily backed. Wyeford, Kentish Lady, Arrow Boy, Arikinui, and Royal Duke, on the outside, and Quantum, Gold Dawn on the rails, began best. Lucky Bag and Arikinui hadl charge on to the course proper from Quantum, Gold Dawn, Knightlike, and Great Star. Arikinui held off tho opposition in the run in, and beat the fast-finishing outsider Propaganda by nearly a length. Quantum was a length back third, and then came Royal Duke, Gold Dawn, Knightlike, Great Star, Sea Raid, and Clarendon.
