The Minister of Marine (the Hon. J. G. Cobbo) will lcavo to-morrow for Auckland to .attend tlio annual conference of harbour boards.

Tho Chief: Justice (Sir Charles Skerrett) will leave by the Port Dennison to-morrow for London.

Captain Findlay, from Christehurcli, and Major Isitt, from Auckland, are in Wellington on Air Force business.

Mr. J. C. Gould returned to-day by the Tahiti from Sydney.

Mr. T. T. Hugo, Dominion Inspector of Fire Brigades, is visiting Auckland.

Judge Jones, of the Native Land Court, left for Auckland last evening.

Mr. O. P. Becman, London passenger manager of the Orient Line, accompanied by Mrs. Beeinan, arrived by tho Taliiti this morning, en route to San Francisco.

General F. W. Cavendish and Mrs. Cavendish arrived by tho Tahiti this morning from ' Sydney for a tour of tho Dominion.

Mr. Hope Gibbons returned to Wellington this morning by the Tahiti from Sydney.

Dr. E. F. D'Ath arrived this morning by tho Tahiti. He comes from the Eoyal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, and is proceeding to Dunedin as Professor of Pathology.

Mr. H. W. Apporly, general manager of the A.M.P. Society, Sydney, who is making a tour of inspection of tho society's New Zealand branches, has arrived in Wellington from the North.

Mr. C. L. Wilson, managing director of Australian and New Zealand Investments, Ltd., is a passenger by tho Tahiti, which arrived to-day. Mr. Wilson intends to visit England on business, and^ii]! join the Niagara at Auckland.

Mr. H. S. Edgar lias been appointed to take charge of tho Administration at Norfolk Island pending the appointment of a permanent successor to the late Judge Herbert, as Administrator, states the "Sydney Morning Herald." Mr. Edgar is a brother of Mr. Edgar, M.L.C., of Victoria.

The death occurred at his late residence at Seatoun, at the advanced age of 80. years, of Mr. Henry M'Farlanc. Until 1909 ho was a well-known and respected schoolmaster in the Wairarapa, and for the past twenty years a resident of Seatoun, where he lived in retirement. Born in Glasgow in. 1849, he emigrated to Sandhurst, Victoria, where ho entered the teaching profession, and ho was on tho staff of the high school there for seven years. In 1879 he came to New Zealand, and for 30 years was on the teaching staff of tho Wellington Education Board, retiring owing to ill-health in 1909. The late Mr. M'Farlano took a kcon interest in bowling, being a foundation and life member of tho Seatoun Bowling Club. Ho is survived by his 'widow, three sons, and four daughters, all of whom reside in Wellington.

A Press Association message from Westporfc states that the Minister of Mines (the Hon. W. A. Voitch) left for Seddonville on Saturday morning, inspecting en route the Westport Coal Company's plantation. He was greatly interested in tho success that appears to bo ensured in. growing timber for mining purposes. At Seddonvillo the Minister met deputations, principally from co-operative minors, who sought, amongst other concessions, a reduction of tho royalty, increased from Gd to Is, on all new leases. Tho Minister afterwards visited Karamea, and left for Bcefton in the afternoon.

Tho Bey. 11. van Staveren, who for nearly fifty-two years has been Chief Babbi of Wellington, attained his oighticth year on Saturday last. The occasion was marked by a, quiet family gathering, but friends in many places remembered the date, and a great many messages of congratulation wore received. Rabbi van Staveren was born in Bolsward, IMesland, his father being Chief Kabbi of Bolsward for fifty-four years. He married Miss Miriam Barnott on Ist September, 1875, and then came to New Zealand in the Waikato, arriving at Lyttclton in July, 1577.
