AN ENGINEER'S OPINION

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

HAMILTON, 26th January

Grave doubts as to tho stability of the Arapuni dam are held by Mr. H. M. Chrystall, consulting engineer, of Christehurcli. After an inspection of the dam site yesterday, Mr. Chrystall said that when he was consulting engineer for one of the tendering companies ho hold grave doubts of the suitability of rhyolite ash for a dam, and even of the gravity of the type. Yesterday ho inspected tho diversion tunnel and found water squirting through tho concreto walls and spouting through a floor 2ft 6in thick. There was also erosion at the head-race. He considered it tho duty of the Government to immediately assess the actual danger and provide ample facilities.for warning people in tho danger zone so that they could escape in tho event of ■the dam breaking.
