LAND SETTLEMENT
<<A SUBSTANTIAL PRO-
GRAMME 1'
The conference of Crown Land Commissioners and-members of the Land Purchase-Board, called by the Minister of Lands (the Hon. G. W. Forbes) to consider questions affecting the Government's land settlement policy, has not yet concluded its deliberations, although it was expected to do so to-day.
In a statement to the Press, the Minister said a number of valuable suggestions in regard to the settlement of unoccupied land had been made by the Commissioners, and these were being considered to-day. The object of the conference, said Mi. Forbes, was to place him in touch with the position in the various districts and with obstacles in the way of carrying out increased settlement. As a result of the conference ho hoped : that he would be able to put into operation a fairly substantial programme of land settlement. It would take some time to complete his policy, but it was his intention to go on with the.business.
To-morrow night Mr. Forbes, in company with the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. E. A. Eausom), will leave for a comprehensive tour of the South Island.
