TUNNEL TO AFRICA
UNDER GIBRALTAR STRAITS
ANOTHER AMBITIOUS SCHEME
Times" Cables.
(Received 15th January, 1 p.m.)
LONDON, 14th January.
The Mad,rid correspondent of "The Times" states that an expert commission of engineers, geologists, and hydrographors, has selected a point.west of Tarifa from which to begin work on tho Straits of Gibraltar tunnel. They will
select a point on tho African shore in February. The technical problems are not considered to offer great difficulties. The tunnel would be only two miles longer than the Simplon tunnel, but economically tho enterprise is regarded as hazardous, as traffic would hardly be expected to prove remunerative until the tunnel was connected with the Africau railways. This would bo unlikely to happen for many years.
