Water for Day's Bay. Afc yesterday's meeting of the Hutt County' Council a letter was received from the Board of Health advising that it proposed issuing a. requisition from the council to provido an up-to-date water and drainage system for Day's Bay. The chairman (Mr. D. R. Haggard) asked that tho matter should bo left ht-his hands, and this was granted. White Bridges for Motorists. Military Parades. A correspondent writes drawing attention to the fact that in a list of evening parades for January issued to certain Territorial units by the Defence Department, Anniversary Day has been included. Tho letter was referred to the Defence Department this morning, when it was stated that Anniversary Day had been included in the list inadvertently. There will, therefore, be no parade on 22nd January. Visiting Bowlers and Maori. Some of the Australian bowlers taking part in the New Zealand tournament have gained some knowledge of Maori words, and, even although they are not too good with the pronunciation, they apparently find them very expressive. South Canterbury Power Scheme. .. The announcement is made by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. E. A, Eausoin) that tenders have been accepted by the Government for the first two units for electrical power generation in connection with the South Canterbury scheme on the Waitaki River. The approach railway from Kurow is completed, and work is in progress on the big gravity dam. Initial power development will be by two units, each generator having a capacity of 10,666 k.v.a., generated at 11,000 volts, this being stepped up/by transformers to 110,000 volts for transmission. The generators are to ,bo coupled to Francis reaction turbines of 23,000 horse-power each, similar to those installed at Arapuni, though much larger. Those machines will be impressive in their dimensions, as the diameter of the gonerators.is 29 feet. Their speed will be 125 revolutions por minute. The total weight of a generator - and turbine is over 400 tons. The weight of the moving parts, plus hydraulic thrust, will be 2SO tons. ' -'•■

Promiscuous Plant Importation. Commending a system of exchange of plants: and seeds between New Zealand and Great Britain, Mr. E. F. Stead,' speaking at the Horticultural Conference in Christchurch, issued a warning against careless and promiscuous importation of :planta which :. might possibly ■ outstay and outgrow their welcome. '' While I was in a garden in Ireland," he said, "I admired a plant with a pretty niauv/s blossom. 'Oh,' I was told, 'that is a Chinese raspberry. It hafc grown wonderfully, and has covered that field inside three . years, while it has also got into the woods.' If it can grow like that in Great Britain," said Mr. Stead, "Heaven help us if it gets into New Zealand. If that species, of raspberry gets into New Zealand the Cawthron Institute . will be kept busy breeding bugs for many years to come to eradicate it.-" He added that he Wad also been shown a creeper' which had grown up an oak within a year, and ventured the opinion that if ever it got into' this country it would escape from the gardens and take years to eradicate. Harbour Boards' Conference. \ •.On 30th January, in Auckland, opens the annual conference of the Harbours Association, which will be/attended by some sixty delegates. The chairman of I the conference will be Mr. H. E. Mackenzie, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, and vice-president of the Harbours Association. The Minister of Marine, the Hon. J." G. Oobbe, who is' also chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, will attend the conference and deliver an address. Tho ' Mayor of Auckland (Mr. G. Baildon) will welcome delegates to the northern city, and a programme of entertainment, including tours of the harbour, has been arranged by the Auckland Harbour Board. ; The delegates representing the Wellington Harbour Board at the conference will be Messrs. G. Mitchell and D. J. M'Gowan and Captains C. M'Arthur and C. F. Post.
