LAW-ABIDING CITY CINEMA IN HOSPITAL (From Our Own-Correspondent.). NELSON, 10th January. The steamer Alexander has been chartered by Messrs. Thomas Hunt and Sons, the well-known Nelson sheepbreeders, of "Highficld," Wakefield, to take stud rams for the annual Hawkes Bay sheep fair. The Alexander sails to-morrow afternoon A shock of earthquake accompanied by a rumbling noise was felt in the Nelson' district at 10.30 last evening.

It has been decided to name the Anchor Shipping Company's . new steamer Eata. Captain Pearson, who has been with the company for several years, leaves New Zealand for England shortly to bring the vessel out. The party of children from the Ariki School, some fourteen miles back from Mui-ehison, are enjoying their visit to Nelson —and the sea. Most of the children had never seen a train or the sea before. Their teacher, Mrs. Hutclmigs, who has arranged the visit and is taking the children round, says that everyone has been most kind to them. They are camping at Tahuna, and enjoying its many attractions. Dr. Bevau Dodds, Dean of the Dental Faculty at .Otago -University, is at present in Nelson. One of the local police officers yesterday stated that in nearly forty years' service in the Police Force of New Zealand he had never encountered a more law-abiding or more peaceful community than Nelson. Crime was negligible in' the city, and even on such occasions as Christmas Eve- and New Year's Eve, there were no signs of hooliganism. Mr. H. D. Skinner, curator of the Duncdin Museum and lecturer in anthropology at Otago University, is at present visiting Nelson. At yesterday's meeting of the Nelson Hospital Board the chairman, Mr. T. Neale,, stressed the necessity for collecting'fees due by patients. Ho stated that if the parents of each child in the- institution, would pay only what it cost them to keep the child at home 50 per cent, of the hospital's financial troubles would be overcome.

During December 87 patients were admitted to the hospital, and 75 discharged; 71 remained in the- institution at the end of the month. The chairman (Mr. T. Neale) and managing secretary (Mr. G. P. Chapman) have been appointed the Hospital Board's delegates to the Hospital Boards Conference at Palmerston North in March. A special meeting of the board is to be held on the day of the next ordinary meeting to consider applications for the position of resident surgeon. Arrangements have been made for showing moving pictures at the hospital. The management of .the Empire Theatre has offered the loan of a film once a fortnight. The only expense will be 5s to the operator, as the board owns a. very fine machine.
