THE CARNIVAL

SPORTS AND RATEPAYERS BADGES OUT TODAY Though a few days ago some-disapp-ointment was expressed by the organiser and committee of the Art Gallery and Museum Carnival at the lack of '' punch that was being shown by {lie sports bodies and the ratepayers' associations in the qWen contest, that comment cannot now be made, for both committees have made substantial progress. To-day the organiser received from the secretary of the Wellington Rugby Union a letter to the effect that as the Rugby season is closed the Union cannot as such take a direct part in the contest, but remarking that most of Bugby players are members of one or othor of the, summer sports bodies, through which they may be approached. The disappointment of the carnival committee that the Eiigby Union cannot, under the eireumstanceSj join in was very much tempered by the enclosure, a cheque for £25, representing 300 votes for Atalanta (Miss Swinburne). The Mercantile Cricket League has written stating that it will assist in every way possible, and other sports bodies have telephoned in for information of what is required of them. Two thousand sports badges were applied for this morning, and wiil be referred to spectators at the various meetings dri Monday, Labour Day1. The Municipal Association's preliminary contest to decide which of nine or ten candidates shall take part in the main queen contest should be right under way next week. Hataitai has chosen Miss Eileen Searle and Melrose Miss_ Edna Mann; fivd more district Candidates are to be announced early next week. District canvassers have not yet been announced, but as showing the success of some at any rate of them the case of one block at Boseheath is promising: that block canvass brought in £25 in a couplo of hours, with still a few houses to be called oiij the greater number of donations being of 20s and upwards. It remains with the district associations or committees to say whether moneys so collected are to be paid into the Mayor's or the district carnival funds.
