REGISTERED WIREMEN

PRODUCTION OF CERTIFICATES ".It i-s well that the public should know that any person having electrical wiriug work done is entitled to require tho person doing it to produce his certificate of registration," said Mr. J. Tudhope in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when he appeared in support of a charge against William Neil Dcakin, of having failed to produce his certificate of registration as an electrical wireman when asked for it by an inspector. "Mr. Tudhope said that it was the first prosecution o^ its kind in New Zealand. For the effective administration of the Electrical Wirenicn's Registration Act, and to ensure that its provisions would not be evaded by unregistered men doing wiving work and pretending they were registered, it had been provided that every registered wireman must carry his certificate of registration while engaged in electrical wiring work, and produce it when required to do so by an inspecting engineer, the electrical engineer, or inspector of the supply authority, tho occupier of the premises, or the person for whom the work was being done. The Wellington wiremen at least should be aware that they must carry their certificates as the secretary of their union mentioned it in his quarterly notices to them. In the present case there was no suggestion that the defendant was not qualified or registered, ami as it was the first prosecution of its kind no penalty was asked for. Detikm was registered, but failed to produce his certificate when asked to do so by an inspecting engineer. The sole purpose of the prosecution was to emphasise that a registered electrical wireman must be able to produce his certificate. In view of the fact that no penalty was asked for, tho Magistrate (Mr. E. Page, S.M.), convicted and discharged the defendant. _________^_______
