NEW SOUTH WALES BEATEN

SOUTHLAND'S GOOD FOEWARDS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, 12th September. • Flaying at Rugby Park this alternoou, before an attendance of 6000, Southland succeeded in defeating New South Wales touring team by 31 points to 2G. Conditions were ideal for football,^ and tho ground wag in good order. Features of the game were the spleudid display of the Southland forwards, who were superior to those of the visitors, and the large number of penalties awarded agaiust the visitors. The teams were:— New South-Wales (light blue): Croft, Hemingway, Smairl, Towers, Bull, Bavtley, Snell, Cerutti, O'Donnell, Laugeuberg, O'Connor, Bland, Loudon, Barsley, Abr bott. Southland (maroon): Oughton, Murray, Diack, Geddes, M'AuMe, Bell,' Johnson, Roberts, Metealfe, Bird, Batehelpr, M'Leod, Coekroft, Southern, M'Ewan. Play opened spectacularly. Within two minutes of the commencement Loudon secured the ball and, eluding the Maroons, fell over to score an easy try. Croft failed to convert. The home team attacked in retaliation, but the passing movement broke down. The Maroons persisted for a time, but Btand got away to be brought to earth by Roberts. Geddes, following up fast, tackled him as he fell across to score. Abbott missed. A few moments later a retaliatory attack by the Maroons saw M'Ewan gain possession and set off. Just as he was tackled he passed to M'Auliffe, who scored. Diack converted. Southland 8, New South Wales 6. Towers put in a brilliant run, threw oS Bell, and badly fooled Oughton to score in a convenient position. He missed the kick. New South Wales 9, Southland 8. Southland attacked vigorously, and from a melee on the line M'Ewan obtained possession and ecored. Diack missed. Southland kept up the offensive, and Johnson potted a goal. The visitors took a turn at attack, but Oughton cleared. The Maroons were penalised, and Bland had a shot at goal which missed. The ball went out in dangerous territory for New South Wales, and Johnson securing from the line-out, dived, but fell short. New South Wales were then penalised, and Diack goaled. The Maroons were in turn penalised, and the kick just missed, the ball hitting the post. The Maroons swiftly carried play to the other end of the field, nearly getting across. New South Wales were penalised, and Diack had a shot at goal, which just fell sh6rt, but Geddes, following up, quickly snapped up the ball and scored. Diack converted. Southland 23, New South Wales 9. A fine burst of play on the part of the visitors occurred when Croft secured and made a brilliant run, throwing off the Maroon backs, but he was stopped by Oughton. Before he fell he transferred to O'Connor, who in turn passed to Hemingway, who scored. Bartlet converted. Southland 23, New South Wales 14. On resuming in the second spell the Maroons adopted attacking tactics, and Murray nearly got across at the corner. New South Wales cleared, but Oughton secured and kicked, following up well to rob a visitor of the ball. New South Wales then attacked, Bardsley, Towers, and Bull showing up prominently. A moment later O'Connor scored. Bartlet failed to. convert. The visitors returned to the attack a minute later, Towers putting in a splendid run and scoring. He missed with the kick. Southland 23, New South Wales 20. Southland, headed by Geddes, then made a sortie, but New South Wales defence was sound. From a scrum Southland obtained possession and-scored. Diack converted easily. Southland 28, New South Wales 20. A long kick by ;New South Wales saw Oughton miss the ball, but he held back the attack until Southland got behind him. New South Wales were then awarded a penalty, and Croft kicked a splendid goal. Southland 28, New South Wales 28. Another determined attack by the visitors broke down, but a few minutes afterwards Hemingway scored easily. Croft missed with the kick. Southland 28, New South Wales 26. An attack by Southland followed, Geddes showing out. Bell intercepted a passing rush by the visitors, and play returned to New South Wales territory, where the visitors were penalised, but Diack missed the kick. Southland pressed, and Geddes securing passed to Bell, who was robbed. Southland were awarded a penalty, and Diack made a splendid kick. Southland 31, New South. Wales 26. The- visitors were penalised, and Southland 'confined play to New South Wales territory, but the visitors were awarded a penalty, and a long kick placed the ball in Southland territory, from which it returned a few seconds later. New South. Wales were then penalised, and a good kick by Diaok just fell short. New South Wales were attacking when the final whistle sounded a few minutes later with the scores: Southland 31. New South Wales 26.
