RAILWAY CONTROOL

«> . THE RECENT CHANGE MR. STERLING'S APPOINTMENT Reference is made by the Minister of Railways (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates) in the Railways Statement to the change in the control of the Railways Department and the appointment of Mr. H. H. Sterling as General Manager. Mr. Coates says that the knowledge Mr. Sterling, who was Assistant General Manager a few years ago and later a member of the Railway Board, must have gained in commercial activities during the time he was general manager of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy ompany, Ltd., when coupled with his previous railway experience, should be of very great value, especially insofar as Mr. Sterling has had an opportunity of gauging the attitude of railway users, and gaining actual experience of their points of view. "I am sure that his return to the Department as General Manager with, an enlarged commercial and executive experience will be of material assistance to the Government in connection. with the administration of this important Department," says Mr. Coates. "In reference to the retirement of the board, I desire to express my own keen appreciation, and that of the Governomnt, in regard to the industry applied by the late board in dealing with the large volume of work necessitated during their term of office by tho introduction of now methods and a modernised policy. I also wish it to be placed on record that tho board performed good work at a critical stage of railway history. The long list of reforms in administration and benefits given to the user during the board's regime are recognised by all those who patronise our railways.?.' . .-:
