EDUCATION REVISION
SYLLABUS CHANGES COST OF £800,000 An announcement that it would cost something like £800,000 to give effect to the recommendations of the Syllabus Committee was made by the Minister of Education (the Hon R. A. Wright) in the House of Representatives. yesterday afternoon when replying,to the debate on the Education report. The Minister said he believed the junior high school system was an ideal one, but the whole question was simply one of expense. "I have absolutely refused in the past and I refuse now," said Mr. Wright, "to bo concerned with any system that is going to be launched unless tho - money is provided. That only means starving some other branch of the system. A report has just been, drawn up by. the Department showing exactly what can bo done in regard to the suggestions made in the majority report in regard to the syllabus. That report I propose to submit to Cabinet as soon as I caif get a grip of it. The report suggests that it would cost something like £800,i000 to give effect to all the .recommendations, but, of course, the expenditure can be extended over a number of years. Such a scheme should not be extended over, say, twenty-five years, but it could be spread.over "eight or ten years, perhaps less, if possible."
