THE FREE AMBULANCE

At a special meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board to-day (Mr. C. M. Luke presiding), Mr. F. Castle said that the committee appointed to meet the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) to discuss the proposal of the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) with reference to the control and finance of the free ambulance service, had placed the position before the Minister. The Minister, said Mr. Castle, favoured the continuance of the existing system of the board giving a subsidy towards the maintenance of the free ambulance. Mr. Young was not favourable to the board taking over the control of the ambulance service in the way suggested by tho Mayor. Mr. Castle moved: "That tho Mayor be informed that the board is unable to agree to the proposal submitted to it." The Rev. H. Van Staveren, in seconding tho motion, said he was convinced when tho proposal was made that the Government would not agree to it. In reply to a question, Mr. Castle said he understood from the Minister that no special legislation would be necessary to enable the local bodies to contribute to the ambulance.
