"DAMNATION OF FAUST."
The musical setting or "Faust" by Charles Gounod has been made more or less a fashion by several renderings during the past few years, but that of Hector Berlioz has not so far outside of Wellington been attempted by any of the Now Zealand societies. In "Faust" he runs the whole gamut of human emotions, and his mood passes from grave to gay, from tenderness to ferocity, with dazzling suddenness. The performance on Saturday evening next'by the Itoyal Wellington Choral Union, under the direction of Mr. Jolin Bishop, will therefore create much interest, and a notable performance, is anticipated. The orchestral work Is especially onerous, and tho union's conductor lias reorganised tho whole of the band since the "Elijah" performance. The soloists selected are. as follows: Margaret, Madame Winnie Frase-r; Brandon, Mr. D. S. Grant; Faust, Mr. Uubcrt Carter; and Mephisto, Mr. 11. Barry Coney. Tho box plan can bo Inspected at The Bristol. Tho final rehearsal will take place on Friday at 7.50, when only those taking part will bo admitted. The performance will commence at 7.45 sharp on Saturday evening.
