POOR FISH!

A quaint touch of humour was given to the conclusion of the. debate in the House of Representatives yesterday on the annual report of the Marine Department, when the Hon. Sir Maui Pomare replied in characteristic . manner .to the discussion. . . In regard to the question of depletion of fish supplies ill Auckland Harbour, raised by Mr. W. Parry (Auckland East), Sir Maui' said ho sympaj thised with tho hon. gentleman; "I would advise him to" get another line," jhe said; "his lino is no good. It must be a Labour line, and the fish won't bite." (Laughter.) Kali were getting very scarce in our harbours, he said, and that was to be expected. "What else could be expected?" he asked. "When, you disturb creatures of Nature they always seek shelter. In Auckland you have launches skipping over the harbour at 30 or 40 miles an hour. That naturally would scare the' fish' away. Then the launches leave behind them an awful stink, and of course some of tho fish coming behind may breathe some of it in. (Laughter.) Then when. you have such a vast population as there is in the Queen City, and all those sowers, and poisons coming from the hospitals, of course it is going to make a difference to .the; fish in j;ho harbour." (Laughter.)
