PETONE WIN TROPHY

BY ONE GOAL TO NIL > HAIiD GAME AT BASIN Petoue won the coveted Chatham Cup on Saturday when the Northern (Otago) eleven was defeated by 1 goal to nil at the Basin Reserve, in the presence of an attendance of some 5000 spectators. Among those present were the. Prime Minister (tli,e Right Hon. J. G. Cqates), Ministers of the Crown, and the Mayor, of Wellington (Mr. G.A. Troup). The Chatham . Cup,, which was presented to New Zealand by the personnel of H.M.S. Chatham, when the warship was on the New Zealand Station, is a -trophy, which is competed for by all the.Association football clubs in the Dominion. It is a "knock-out" competition, matches being played on the elimination basis. Petone earned the right to represent Wellington, after which they defeated a Hawkes Bay cloven, and a week ago travelled to Auckland, and beat the -V.M.C.A. Club there in* the North Island final. The Northern Club was successful in the South Island final. , Petohe's win is meritorious when it is considered that this is the club's first season in Wellington senior A football. The game on Saturday, generally, was not outstanding for brilliancy of play, but . there .-'were ' occasional'flashes ■ of. bright

football, which kept interest from lagging. The concluding five minutes' play, when Northern 'made desperate efforts to equalise—and were"'almost successful—provided -thrilling"football''and kept excitement at a high pitch.; Petone were sncceastul jiv-keeping their goal;clear,.and when the 'filial whistle blew awarding .them the game, they were given a great reception. Appreciation .of Northern's efforts, also,, was not lacking. .' , In the early stages of the game the advantage was distinctly the visitors. Northern possessed wing men in their torward line superior to Petone's, and an exceptionally fine defence. In the second half Petone made a much better showing and -kept Northern fully occupied. The teams were as follow:— ' Northern.—M-Qnarrie; Coates,', Scoular; Perry, Munsie, Baird; M'Dowall/M'Hugh, Kuddiman, M'Cormack, M'Lean. . Petone.—M'Vean; Steele, Haines; l'arquhar, Campbell, Stubbs; M'Kenme, -Irvine, .Leslie,'Camerori1, James. . Referee,'Mr. G. Jackson. PLAY DESCRIBED. , Northern kicked off against a fresh southerly breeze, and pressed on the right wing, but/the Petqne halves, fctubbs, nr particular, were sound. Relief- came", to Petone wlien the ball went behind. The visitors were on the defensive for a, while, but were soon down at the Petone goal,. M'Dowell and M'Hugh ; putting in some solid work ou the wing. The Petone half line was hard pressed, but came through the ordeal. Cameron, Petono inside left, obtained possession and passed to Leslie, but the latter found the Northern, defence too good. Campbell obtained possession and swung the'ball-to Cameron, who, when in a good position, shot, but ■the ball went high. A few minutes, later Campbell' 'obtained possession, and after beating several opponents, sent hi a ground shot, which M'Quarrie gathered. Some bright play followed, and a nice centre from M'Dowell was punched clear by M'Vean. Then Leslie obtained pos-. session, and: in characteristic style raced, downfield and shot from twenty yards out. The ball was a- few inches too high. Petone conceded a corner, but the kick was a poor one, and Stubbs cleared. M'Lean'swung 'a centre across, and Ruddiman missed an open goal. M'Dowell sent a hard shot back to the.goal, and M'Vean. brought off a good save. Petone were hardly holding Northern, when Farquhar took a lightning-like shot from'thirty' yards out. The leather shot into the net off Scoular's head. Petone 1, Northern 0. After the kick-off, M'Dowell swung the ball across to M'Lean, whose shot went just over, the bar. M'Kenzie crossed to James,1 who had an opportunity to improve Petone's position, but ho finished the movement with a weak shot at goal. Northern pressed, and M'Hugh shot twice, brought off a good save. Potone were finding it difficult to get through the Northern defence, and the visitors were proving dangerous in attack. M'Lean, after a solo run- down the line, sent in a beautiful shot which struck the cross-bar. The ball dropped to near Ruddiman's feet, but the latter sent in a weak shot, which M'Vean easily gathered. Some exciting moments occurred when there was a melee on Northern's goal line, but the visitors cleared. James centred, and Leslie headed-the ball, which was just gathered by M'Quarrie. Half-time was called shortly afterwards with the score unchanged. Upon .resumption of play, Northern attacked, but Campbell relieved the pressure and sent the ball out to Leslie, who, however, just failed to connect. Petone kept, the ball up at Northern's goal. A "header" from James was saved at the expense of a corner, and a shot from Farquhar missed the net by inches. Northern worked down to the Petone goal, and a shot from M'Dowell was headed clear by Farquhar. A corner followed, but the shot waa weak und easily cleared. Campbell sent the ball out to James, whose shot was intercepted by Scoular. A shot from Cameron was neatly gathered by M'Quarrie. A period of more even open play followed, with Potone attacking most of the time. Northern's chances' looked bright when M'Cormack centred in a good position, butßuddiman failed to connect. M'Lean again beat his men, and worked down to the goal, sending in a fine centre. M'Vean, however, was safe. The leather went out to James, whose shot at goal missed by a narrow margin. Cameron and James were identified in a forward attack which ended in the ball lodging in - Northern's net, but the goal was ruled off-side. Northern attacked strongly, and a shot from M Cormack brought M'Vean to, his knees. Three , corners, were,, conceded: in succession by Petone, but the ball was cleared. M'kenzio and' James worked into a scoring position in front of an open goal, but James fell at the critical moment M'Cormack and M'Hugh ./ere identified in a lorward movement, which presented Northern with a chance of equalising, but the Miot missed the net by inches. Pelone held' Northern after that, and the final whistle blew with the score unaltered. After the game, the Chatham Cup was presented to the Pctono team by the ' Prime Minister, who congratulated the I

Wellington, eleven on their win, and paid a tribute to the sporting game played by the visitors.
