Taxis in Paris cost less than anywhere else in the world. The drivers are astonishingly adroit; their cabs are very comfortable. For all these reasons taxis are treated as familiarly as the underground traius. Someone has worked out that in Paris four persons can ride six miles for 2s 2d, whereas it would cost them for the same distance 4s 2d in Berlin, about the same iv Rome nnd Madrid, 5s iff London, and 5s 8d in New York. Taxicab owners in Paris are not philanthropists entirely, it is pointed out; rather, there are bo many of them and competition is bo keen that prices are kept low and profits reasonable.
