THE WEATHER

UNSETTLED PROSPECTS Tlie westerly depression passed fairly rapidly eastward of the Chatham Islands during last night, and there has since been a rise.in -pressure, more especially over the South Island, so that by this morning a weak anti-cyclone was enveloping the Dominion. Following the rise, the winds changed from westerly to moderate southerlies in the night, but at' 9 "a.m. to-day light and variable breezes, or calms, were report* cd. During yesterday and last night the weather was,somewhat changeable, with scattered rain, chiefly in the western districts. Conditions,- however, have rapidly cleared, and except forconsiderable fogginess ni the northernmost districts, this morning it was mostly fair to cloudy. The forecast is ,for northerly winds, freshening, and after 24 to 36 hours backing to southerlies. The weather is likely to be fine at first, but rapidly becoming unsettled in northern districts, and later more generally, ' with . rain developing. Mild temperatures may be expected, but a cold change is probable within about 36 hours. /■ ■_ . ' ;
