IMPROVING WEATHER

CURIOUS TEMPERATURES : The cyclone has now moved towards the south-east, being centred this morning to the south-east of the Chatham Islands. Barometric pressure has risen rapidly, especially since midnight, after »the passing in the south of a secondary low pressure wave. Conditions generally have been cold and squally, most districts experiencing showers, there being heavy falls of rain in some places in the South Island. Strong southwesterly winds during the night changed temporarily to" the. north-west during the passage of the secondary, wave. This had a curious effect in Wellington, causing the maximum shade temperature of the twenty-four hours, 52.9 degrees, to be registered at midnight. The winds, however, have returned to:, the cold quarter, but'are decreasing. The forecast is for strong south-west-erly or southerly winds. The weather, although still changeable, should improve, coastal districts experiencing scattered showers. Cold nights with many frosts are to be expected. '
