COLLEGE PLAY

-WOULD-BE GENTLEMAN•' - '■'The Would-be Gentleman," a comedy in three acts, translated from the' French play by Moliere, was presented to a large audience in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall by the Wellington College Dramatic Society last night. The boys made excellent representations of the various characters of the play, which deals with the aspirations of a shopkeeper in Paris, M. Jourdain, who has acquired considerable affluence. W. H. Turner portrayed the part of the would-be gentleman, and was well supported by H. C. Middlebrook in the role of hisi'-wife. Mme. Jourdain had not time for the 'petty ambitions of her husband, and had only .• the welfare of her daughter's love affair before her. Owing to the lover being a person 'of no standing in court circles, however, M. .Jourdain would have nothing to do with Cieonte Dubois, the young gallant who aspired to the hand of his daughter! . G. T. Young played the part Dubois,- and his was the most outstanding performance. His voice was good, and his manner confident. The comedy bowled merrily along with the piiffed-up husband, ever the dupe of the titled ones, ready to sacrifice all to position. The piece was well handled by all. The programme was supplemented by selections by tho college orchestra. The proceeds of performances—another will be given to-night—are in aid of the College Improvement Fund, for which tho students are making some big efforts.
