SUCCESS TO CYCLIST
; ■ .« MESSAGE FROM MR. COATES The Prime Minister (tho Eight Hon. J. Cr. Coates) has forwarded tho following cablegram to Harry Watson, the New Zealand cyclist who is to take part in the Tour de France international cycling event in Franco at the week-end: — : "Best wishes from New Zealand for success in forthcoming contest^ Kia Ora. —Coates, Prime Minister." The ,Tour de Franco is the biggest cycling race in the world, being contested over 3338 miles, spread over 22 sections. The race starts ' on 17th June and finishes in Paris on 15th July. Watson is tho Ne-w Zealand member of the team of Australians which left for France early in March, the Australians being H. Opperman (captain), E. Bainbriclge, and P. Osborn, all of "Victoria. The success of the riders will depend on how they can adapt themselves to Continental conditions and practices, for the style of long-distance cycle racing on tho Continent is very different from that in Australia, and New Zealand and elsewhere. To have any chance of success the riders will have to alter their whole style of riding and start out on totally different lines.
