AN APOLOGY
MINISTEE TO ME. SEBIPLE1 ' The recent reference of the Minister of Lauds (tho Hon. A. D. M'Lood) to Mr. R. Semple as "of 'to hell with agreements' _.fame," which was tho subject of a letter sent to tho Minister by Mr. Semple asking for a withdrawal or an apology, has been unreservedly retracted. On his return from Taranaki yesterday, and before receipt of Mr. Semple's letter, which did not reach him until this morning, Mr. M'Leod made a statement apologising to Mr. Semple for incorrectly ascribing to him the "to hell with agreements" observation. "It was perhaps that gentleman's re-cently-reported remark, 'to hell with doles,' " he said, "that led me astray. I have been absent from Wellington for ten days, and in the rush of tho tour did not have an opportunity to make an earlier public, withdrawal. During a long public life I have never wil.fulJy done anyone an injustice, or failed to make full retraction immediately an incorrect statement has been pointed out. I try to hit hard, but I trust never unfairly.,"
