DECIDE TO HOLD ALOOF . ' i THEIR PRESIDENT CONDEMNED (Beceived 30th May, 10 a.m.) . SYDNEY, This Day. The "Waterside Workers' Union had high hopes of a settlement on the basis of a compromise as proposed by Mr. Tudehope. The failure of the negotiations throws tho onus back on Mr. Tudehope, who has been asked to attend p. meeting of the Trades Union Courieil and maritime workers at tho Trades Hall, Melbourne, to-morrow. ■ Seamen at Newcastle and in Victoria and South Australia, held mass meetings, and agreed by resolution to hold aloof from ■ the strike. In each case they condemned the action of Mr. Jacob Johnson, general president of' c Seamen's Union, for adapting, the role of a dictator on the cooks' strike. The New South Wales branch of the Seamen's Union held a stormy moeting, and decided upon a non-committal attitude. Tho shipowners -aro convinced that Johnson had tried to involved the seamen, probably at the instigation of tho cooks, and that tho attempt ignominiously failed.
