A YEAR'S WORK

NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN A number of matters of interest to women were dealt with in the annual report of the National. Council of Women (Wellington branch), which was presented at a recent meeting. Matters of importance dealt with during the year included the questions of the lack of employment for young teachers; the employment of married women in the teaching' profession, smaller classes in schools, tho age of marriage (to be raised to sixteen years■ for both sexes), separation of the Child Welfare Department, differentiation between men and women teachers, Children's Courts, police-women, and a number of other matters specially connected with civic life. Pleasure was expressed at the fact that there had been two now affiliations during the year, the Bed Cross Society, and the League of Mothers. A club for the study of international relations and problems had been established, and Mrs. John Hannah .was the representative on the council. Tho N.C.W. of New Zealand was to be represented at the-Pan-Pacific Conference by the Dominion president, Mrs. A. C. Fraer, of Christehurch, who is acting as organiser for the New Zealand delegation. Honorary members were now being admitted to the council in' Wellington. The i following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Mrs. Henry Smith (president), Mrs. M.J. Forde (hon. secretary), Mrs. Hannah (minute secretary), Miss Welch (hon. treasurer), Dr. E. Bryson, Miss England,. Miss M'Crae, and, Airs. E. J. Moore, (vice-presidents). Dr. Agnea Bennett gave an excellent and interesting address, explanatory of the need for a chair of midwifery in connection with the Otago Medical School, as advocated by the women doctors at the recent conference of the B.M.A. at Hamilton.
