A MEDICAL LECTURE ! iA lecture on three epoch-making discoveries in medicine was delivered by Dr. AY. Kerr Hislop last evening under the, auspices of Bed Cross Society at the headquarters of the organisation, Dixon street. The lecturer first sketched the lives Harvey, Hunter, Lister, and Simpson, and then described how tlicii discoveries had revolutionised medical practice. The experiments carried out by Harvey prior to his announcement of his discovery of the eir--1 dilation of the blood were mentioned. In his famous treatise Harvey laid down throe propositions: first, that the blood was incessantly transmitted by the action of the heart to the arteries; secondly, that the tylood under the influence of pho arterial pulse was impelled in a continuous stream through every part of the body; thirdly, that the veins returned the blood incessantly to the heart. John Hunter was described as the greatest name in the character of physiologist and surgeon in the whole annals of medicine. Lister's great discovery and work in connection with antiseptic surgery was outlined, anil its inestimable value to tho world was emphasised. A short reference to the wonderful results flowing from the discovery and uso of chloroform' was made by Dr. Kerr Hislop. Several diagrams were shown to illustrato parts of the lecture. A vote of thanks was accorded to Dr. Hislop for his address.
