LEAGUE OF NATIONS

DOMINION UNION ANNUAL CONFERENCE The Dominion Council of the League of Nations Union of New Zealand opened its annual conference to-day in tho Dominion Farmers' Institute, about twenty being present under the presidency of Dr. A. G. B. Fisher, Professor of Economics, Otago University. Branches all over tho Dominion were represented. Speaking in reference to the annual report, which disclosed a Dominion membership of about 2340, Dr. Fisher said that he thought it was still necessary in this and other countries to push the principles of tho League of Nations, but during the last few years he had noticed a distinct change in' public opinion favourable to tho League. Tho outstanding events in connection with tho League during the year had been the 'optional clauses" —he thought it a pity that Britain and the Dominions had held back from signing, each waiting for a lead from the other. AVith regard i o Samoa, it was difficult to ascertain all tho facts, but ho thought, without going into the merits of the dispute, that tho Government would have beeu better advised to havo been more generous with its publicity on tho matter. * The importance of teaching in the schools facts about the League of Nations was emphasised by several speakers, the secretary being instructed to ascertain whether tho revised syllabus contains reference to the League.
