TARANAKI STREET
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Having read the statement of Colonel M'Douaid and the Mayor's and-City Solicitor's replies, one is forced to come to the conclusion that the City Council takes a long time to do things. During March or April, 1927, the former council decided to widen Lower, Taranaki street to 100 ft. This altered a previous resolution or intention to increase the width from 66ft to 80ft (80ft is all that is needed, a street that is too wide is dangerous for pedestrians to cross). Twelve months after the present council decide to make it 100 ft wide between Wakefield street and Luke's lane, and 84ft between Luke's lane and Manners street. ■ In the meantime they are let in for all sorts of compensation, and before they had really decided what the new width was to be they allow a new building to be started at one end of this block (corner of' Wakefield street), then stop it, and' then allow it to proceed as for a 100 ft street, while they are trying to asseus compensation at the other end. "Gilbert up to date." Now the street will be as straight as a dog's hind leg. Had the council decided the width earlier they would not have needed to purchase the extra 16ft of' street between Wakefield street and Luke's lane. If. the City Council decide that the two widths are to remain, I suggest that they do not allow ■ motor-ears to be parked in Taranaki street between Manners street and Luke's lane, so that the street will not look ao crooked as it really will be. —I am, etc., • , RATEPAYER. 28th May.
