PIG PRODUCTS

ASSISTING THE EXPORTER (.By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") MORRINSVILLE, This Day. The substantial increases in the exports of pork from New Zealand were commented on with satisfaction by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates) in the course of his address last night. IYom Ist October, 1927. to 15th May, 1925, he said, there were killed for export 112,267 porkers and 28,247 bacon pigs, as against 45,839 porkers and 32,978 baconers killed up to the corresponding period ot the preceding yea|r. It was also satisfactory to note, he said, that the Smitlineld market had such a high opinion o£ our porkers, the quality of which was considered superior to the porkers exported from other parts of the world. Referring to- the recent refund on overseas freights granted by the Government in order to assist the pig-raising industry, Mr. Coates said that the propping-up of any particular industry was often subject to comment, but in case of emergency no one could cavil at the Government assisting one of the primary industries that must in the end prove of great value to the Dominion. In support of the Government in its efforts to help the export of pork, said Mr. Coates, the Meat Board, in its shipping freight contracts, had always recognised that this was an export industry that must be helped, and since its inception had specially arranged with the shipping companies for a low shipping rate on pork, so that to-day the shipping freight rate on pork was reduced to about half of what it was in 1922. The total freight reductions obtained by the Meat Board in the various shipping contracts made up to the present year amounted to 9s 3d bn-a 1301b pig, 3s 3d on a 601b sheep, and Is 9d on a 351b lamb. The figures spoke for themselves. ' The special concessions made in regard to the shipping freight rates on pork might be locked upon as practically a subsidy given by t}>o Meat Board to encourage the industry.
