SEAMEN FINED FOR ASSAULT

Two seamen, Patrick "M'Avoy, aged 27, and Peter Haligan, aged 23, members of the crew of the Maimoa, were unable to remember assaulting Henry Walduck Escott last evening when they were charged with that offence in the Magistrate's Court .to-day. Bach of the accused said ho had been drinking. Evidence was given by Henry Escott that his attention was drawn to two men who were -interfering with his son, who was standing on Lambton quay near a shop about 0.10 p.m. M'Avoy struck his boy on the face and witness then went over to him. M'Avoy threatened him, but when he said he would bring the police they walked away. Witness followed at a distarice, hoping to find a policeman. M'Avoy and Haligan were joined by three other men. M'Avoy then came back and struck witness, two of the other men also joining in. The police then came on the sc&ne1 and two of the men were arrested. Haligan, however, when half-way to the police station, ran away, but was later caught on the wharf. V Sergeant Paine said that botli Escott and '.his son bore evidence of. having been assaulted. M'Avoy and Haligan were.under the influence of liquor, but the former more so than the other man. "It looks as though it was a drunken escapade," said the Magistrate (Mr. E.
