THE BARRIER REEF
TO BE EXPLORED 1 ■ i Australian Press Association—United Serrlc*. LONDON, 26th May. The British Association's expedition, to investigate the Barrier Reef sailed by the Ormonde. It includes Mrs. Yonge, and a medical officer, Dr. Yonge> who is in charge. The trip will cost ■ £10,000. The party are taking wise.less and five tons of apparatus, and will live in huts in the low islands, sometimes visiting the mainland. The Great Barrier Beef is a series of corak reefs off the eastern ' coast of , Queensland. It extends for a distance of 1250 miles from just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, advancing into the latitude of Torres Strait, which it nearly closes. At low tide the surface of the reef is just above' the level of tho surface of the water. The reef is not continuous, being broken up by many deep channels. The most valuable products of the reef are pearls and pearl shells, and trepangs.
