TRIBUTE TO DOMINION
PRESERVATION OF SCENERY (From "The Post's" Representative.) NEW YORK, 2nd May. A high tributo to New Zealand and its people is paid in the editorial columns of the "Now York Sun," which holds up New Zealanders as an example to other and much older countries. Natural beauty usually suffers in America with the advent of the tent colony,'bungalow settlement, and the like, but not so in New Zealand. The Department of Lands and Survey in that far-off outpost of the British Empire in its report for 1927, reports that "the advent of the seaside dwelling in the sounds has proved- an important factor in tho improvement to the scenery during the last two years. Most of the owners of these are enthusiastic Naturo lovers, and, besides protecting the remnants of native bush on their properties, have extended these by planting more native or introduced trees. In this way, many hundreds of acres, which a few years ago were bracken or burnt bush, are rapidly becoming reafforested, and prove a ■ welcome addition to our efforts in conserving what we can of the original native bush that beautified tho Sounds." "New Zealand is moro fortunate than we,' says tho "Sun," in reviewing tho report. "Apparently there picnickers meticulously abstain from littering the ground with greasy papers, empty pickle bottles, nd evacuated sardine cans. After learning that bungalows proservo the natural beauties of tho Sounds, it is easily, possible to believe that Now Zealanders are sufficiently civilised to picnic neatly."
