Over a three-mile course at Lyall Bay some twenty-six runners contested for the sealed handicap. Bramley and Thompson laid a well-deh'ned trail and running conditions were excellent. The start was made from the surf shed with Mrs. Bollons dispatching the runners on their journey. F. Silver quickly took the lead, followed by Stevens, Sinclair, aud Woods. On leaving the beach Lawer moved up in fourth.place/, .and.this.order was.maintained..until reach-. lug Queen's Drive intersection. Lawer here was displaced by Smith, the former runner having an attack oil stitch. On entering Freyberg street for the straight home Silver put on an extra spurt and won comfortably by about twenty yards from Stevens, Sinclair, and Woods, in that order. A hundred yards separated the first and fourth, men. Then came Smith, Watei'house, l'ayton. J. Trail, Spoor, O'Meara. Gooze, and Zander, with the rest of the field well back. The sealed handicap resulted as follows: —E. P. Smith (3mm 3see), actual time 17min 54sec, 1; |-H. Spoor (3min 31sec), 18miri 57sec, 2; B. J. Trail (3min 4sec), 18min 54sec, 3. Silver's time was 16min 51sec; Stevens's, 16min 56sec; and Sinclair's, ]7min Msec. Officials of the day were Mr. W. J. Walter and ■ Mr. W. Ballantyne, timekeepers; Mesdames Payton and Needham, judges; Mr. ,T. W. O'Neil, handcapper; and Mrs. Bollons, starter.
