MILLING RIGHTS
IN AKATARAVyA AREA A LABOUR PROTEST The policy of the City and Suburban Water Board in granting rights to milling companies in the Akatarawa catchment area- was discussed at tho last meeting of the Wellington Trades and liabour Council, when the following resolution was carried:— /'That this council offers its protest against tho proposed act of vandalism of the City and Suburban Water Board in respect of tho" proposed letting of timber rights to destroy the bush in the Akatarawa district, and wholeheartedly supports the Mayor of Upper Hutt and Councillors Semplo and M'Kecn .in their protest against this policy. '•' Tho opinion was expressed that the damage' done would not be compensated for by the suggested royalty charges for milling timber, and even if the policy was sound financially, it would still be an unwise policy, as the. destruction of the bush would interfere with the-, water flow, create pollution, and intensify the risk of fire.
