CYCLONE IN THE OFFING
UNFAVOURABLE FORECAST Since Friday there has been a gradual fall in barometric pressure owing to the approach of a cyclone from the north-west. Wireless messages from shipping show that this morning this unwelcome visitor has its centre west of Cape Maria van Diemen. Moderate to strong south-easterly to ' easterly winds, reaching gale force at times, have prevailed in and north of Cook Strait; light to moderate and variable winds, chiefly easterly or north-easter-ly, being experienced south of Cook Strait. Over the South Island the weather has been mainly fair, hard frosts being experienced in many places; in the North Island conditions have been cold and squally, with scattered showers. At 9 a.m. to-day the weather in the Cook Strait area had cleared, but elsewhere in the North Island it was cloudy and overcast, rain falling in the North Auckland district. Tho forecast is for south-easterly to north-easterly winds, strong in Cook Strait and to the north of it, and increasing in force elsewhere, with gales in many places. Unsettled and rainy weather is likely to extend southward from Auckland, gradually extending over the whole Dominion. Heavy falls of rain are probable, temperatures becoming milder, although there may be some frosts to-night in the South Island.
