MUSEUM & ART GALLERY £57,000 IN LARGE SUMS ' FUKTHEB LIST SOON Before leaving for .Christehurch last evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, announced that the amounts now definitely promised towards the city's £100,000 for the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery on • Mount Cook had reached a total of £57,000. There is, however, a greater sum than this in sight, for many of those who have promised to support the project have not yet stated what will be the amounts of their contributions. "You must understand, though," | said Mr. Troup, referring to that aspect, "that there -are still a number of large donations expected from different firms and people. At present we do not propose to ask anyone for a less sum .than £200, as wo feel that there are many who can well afford to spare that much or more for such a cause. Our aim is. to secure £70,000 before we commence the general campaign; and 1 think wo will do it. We have already interviewed the directors of many local companies, and representatives of others, who in many cases have to wait for a board meeting until the appeal can be considered. Then there are companies which have to refer the appeal to headquarters either in Australia or England. But" many of these are very promising, and we have no doubt that within a few weeks' time we shall have cause to congratulate, ourselves." HOW MANY MORE THOUSANDS? As there are between thirty and for.ty promises to assist from those who have been individually approached by the Mayor, Sir Harold Beauchamp, and other members of the committee— and the individual interviews are continuing—the next announcement must send the total well up towards the goal. The committee, however, docs not Wish to announce the amounts until those who have to consult princi-' pals, directors, or business 'associates, in several cases overseas, are able to give their replies. Several large donations, of £1000 and over, are hoped for, and these, the committee feels, should top .the Hat when it is published. The donations of £1000 and over so far announced are:—City Council, £15,000; Academy of Fine Arts, £15,----000; Sir Harold Beauchamp, £5000; Wellington Harbour Board, £5000; Bank of New Zealand, £3000; Mr. Kobert Hannah, £2500; Blundoll Bros., "Evening Post," £1000; Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Blundell, £1000; Colonial Motor Company, £1000; Mr. C. C. Odlin, £1000.
