REGENT THEATRE.

There is a whole lot of fun to bo had at tho Regent Theatre this week in the pictures, "Lovo and Learn" and "Tho Gay Defender." Tho first has tho pretty Monde actress, Esther Ralston, ln tho lead, and tho second features Richard Dix. Esther takes the part of an only child, Nancy, whose parents are on tho verge of a separation, and to keep them together until the first attack of her father's hay fever—an affliction guaranteed to keep him in the home and near his wife —she goes in search of trouble with a capital "T." The quest proves very fruitful, and . ten days in gaol for "speeding," "discharging a firearm," and "resisting an officer" (to mention a few of tho charges) keep the almost partod parents safely united. Then there is a handsome young Judge (Lane Chandler) whom the heroine accidentally "picks up" on her mad career, and tho hilarity comes with a run when, on the eve of his election to office, he falls in lovo with Nancy, and she breaks gaol to warn him of a frame-up designed to ruin his chances. The audience rocked with laughter at the comical situations which followed each other In quick succession before everyone was satisfied that everyone else was "on the level," and the unhappy parents were joined again in a grand finale of sneezing. Miss Ralston has done some of her best comedy work in this entertaining picture. "The Gay Defender" gives Richard Dix a splendid chanco to display his prowess with lariat, and knife, and as Juaquin Murieta, a dare-devil succourer of his intimidated people, he makes a film full of thrilling action. Thelma Todd is the beautiful American girl who wins his love. The orchestra, under Sir. Ivan Fosello, played "Jolly Bobbers" (Suppe)., and other excellent music as an accompaniment to a first-class double feature bill. ■ "Second to None," the big British" naval film released by Paramount and produced from a story by "Bartimeus," comes to the Regent Theatre on Friday next, as the successor to the never-to-be-forgotten "The Flag Lieuten, ant." Based on a theme of the high sense of 'duty in. all ranks of tho senior service, the film is said to have a. strong vein of patriotic sentiment. The film was produced with the co-operation of tho Admiralty, and every scene purporting to tako place on board a warship, including interior scenes In the officers' quarters and in the lower deck mess; was actually taken on a warship and not reconstructed in the studio. Many of theso scenes Involved considerable difficulty, as, for instance, ono in which Moore Marriott climbs to the mast-head to replace the flag which has been shot away. The film has a big climax in graphic pictures of a sea battle. The cast, besides Mooro Marriott in the rolo of the sailor hero, includes 'lan Fleming, Bonita Hiime, Micky ■ Brantford, Aggie Brantford, Johnny Butt, A. B. Imeson, and Alf Goddard. . Tho .film was produced by Jack Raymond, under the personal supervision of Miss Dinah Shurey. Tho plan for tho season is available at the theatre (telephone 44-144) and Bristol.
