STATE ADVANCES

♦ (to the Editor.) Sir, —Can you tell me why one person applying for a Government loan has to wait between one and two years, when others can get a loan in a few weeks, and sometimes a few days? A friend told me he got his loan through in quick time, and I have waited fourteen months- and more. He reckons it is because I never bought a Government section; but the Government sections do not appeal to me, being open and exposed to the winds; whereas my section is a good' one, and in a decent locality.' I am positive the State Advances Department is giving preference to those who buy one of its sections; in fact, it is common knowledge now. It was hinted to m,e that had I bought a t Government - section my < loan would have been through ages ago. Of course, the Department will deny my statements; that is only to be expected; but if a Commission was appointed to inquire into the running of that Department I am sure dozens of witnesses could be found to prove (my statements. My reason for. writing you is to try and get to the bottom of the whole business;, for it seems to me the State Advances Superintendent (probably acting under 'Government orders) is using the Advances money as an inducement to get people to purchase Government sections. It's a pity a fellow cannot buy a section to suit himself and apply for a loan and get it within reasonable time. Why should people be practically told to "buy one of those sections, and you will get your loan"?—I am, etc., "THIS YEAR, SOME TIME—."
