OVERHAUL NEEDED
THE ARBITRATION COURT A brief reference to the Arbitration Court is rn^de in. the annual report of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. "Parliament in the 1927 session had before it a Bill designed to improve the constitution of the Arbitration Court and the functioning of the arbitration system, and it is to be regretted that the Bill was eventually shelved without any constructive proposals for revision, being adopted (states the report). A select committee set up at the Associated Chambers of Commerce Conference made suggestions for the revision of the functions and constitution of the Arbitration Court— amongst commercial men, it is the general opinion that the system urgently needs overhauling. During the period of rising prices, the vicious effect of the existing law was not apparent, but experience has since shown the need for some more flexible system more closely in accord with economic conditions. It is most desirable that some legislation be evolved whereby the common interests of employers and employees in an industry may be better understood, and full co-operation . obtained between them so that produation may be en? couraged and a basis of payment adopted that will bear a close relationship to the value and volume of output, and by which the interests of all engaged in an industry, employees and employers, may be co-ordinated and improved fm- mutual prosperity."
