NELSON NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, Sth April. Mr. William Uoyee, Town Clerk of Motuoka, expired suddenly on Thursday morning. He was a very old and respected citizen, and had been indisposed for a few days only. He acted for many years as secretary of the Oddfellows' Lodge, was a member of the Masonic Craft, and was a prominent bowler. He is survived by a son and three daughters. During the past fortnight building permits to the value of £8367 were issued by the Nelson City Council. At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board the harbourmaster reported that 105 vessels, including four overseas steamers, entered and left the port— the registered tonnage being 43,799, as against 33.961 tons for the corresponding month last year. - ; . Nelson is crowded with visitors. Casual motorists coming in last night found great difficulty in securing accommodation, the hotels and boarding-houses being full. Dr. D. C. Low, medical superintendent of the Nelson Public Hospital, pointed out in his annual report to the Hospital Board the increased use made by the general public of the institution, especially in regard to the maternity block.. There was no maternity block in connection with the old hospital. During the. past year 98 .mothers and 101 babies receivedattention. The report gives unstinted praise to the ability and care of Sister Morrison, who is in charge of the maternity block. The admissions to the hospital for the year just ended totalled 1201, an t'verage of 67.5 , daily. Owing to water shortage the City Council had to r-M'uso applications for water to pump air for organs on Good Friday. If existing regulations are carried out there arc forty gallons of water available daily per head of the population. Commander and Mrs. dc Salis arc guests at Waiuui House.
