A NARROW ESCAPE

BIG FIRE. AVERTED (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. There were all the elements of a big city blaze at 6 o 'clock this morning, when fire broke put in the wholesale clothing manufactory of Messrs. F. M. King, Ltd., Albert street. Fortunately, however, the brigade was promptly called, and the damage was practically confined to the shelves on which the fire originated. Very little damage was done by fire, but water caused substantial damage to expensive dress materials, ladies' overcoats, and dresses. They composed samples which can hardly be replaced in time for booking the new season's business. Tho brigade superintendent considers that tho outbreak was caused by rats nibbling a box of wax matches left in tho workroom, where the fire originated; The covers are in the New Zealand Office, and total £22,000, £8000 on the ' building and £14,000 on tho contents.
