SEVEN SAILORS DESERT
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") \ AUCKLAND, This Day. ' Seven members of the crew of the German steamer Kerston Miles deserted at Auckland and were ]eft behind. The steamer arrived from Texas with case oil on Monday night, and on Saturday morning resumed her voyage to Wellington and Australia. The seven men deserted on Friday, and a search of the city by the ship's officers and the police was without result. If the deserters are not found and put on board before the steamer leaves New Zealand it will be an expensive matter for the owners. The men, being Germans, are classed as aliens, and before the vessel is allowed to leave New Zealand the owners or their representatives will have to give a bond of £.100 for each missing man. No seamen were missing from the German steamer Passat, which discharged sulphur from Texas at Auckland and sailed for Australia last Thursday. The Passat came to Auckland, from Texas, via Australia, and twelve of the crew deserted at Fremantle.
