A RECORD ACHIEVEMENT
Covering the distance from the Franz Josef Hostel to Tho Hermitage in fifteen hours, Messrs. B. ,0. Page, G. G. Lockwood, and E. J. Corcoran, of Christchurch, established a record during the holidays (states the "Lyttelton Times"). It was on Monday, 26th December, that they made the trip. They climbed the Franz Josef Glacier and spent the night at Cape Defiance Hut. They went to Aimer Bivouac the following day, and were, storm-bound until Friday. With conditions perfect the next morning they left at 4.15 o'clock, arriving at The Hermitage at 7 o'clock. Leaving there at 8 p.m. on Sunday, they slept at the Hooker Hut, and continued their tramp across the Copland Pass the following morning in the teeth of a howling gale and encompassed by clouds. That night they slept at the Welcome Flat Hut, and on Tuesday evening arrived at the Glacier Hostel, very fit after their experience. Guide Harcourt. accompanied them.
