WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION

The final meeting of the year of the Wellington War Belief Association was held yesterday. Mr. L. O. H. Tripp presided and others present were: Messrs.' A. Macintosh, A. Veiteh, D. M'Laren, Q. Mitchell, C. M. Luke, S. A. Harrison (headquarters N.Z. Returned Soldiers' Association), and A. 0. Leach (secretary). *> . ' . .■

It was decided that nominations for the re-election of retiring members close: on 16th January. The five retiring conjmitteemen, who are eligible for reelection, are Messrs. Tripp, Luke, Mitchell, Veitch, and Macintosh. The date of the twelfth annual meeting of the association was set down as 22nd February, 1928. The Applications Committee reported that it bad met on three occasions since the last executive committee meeting. During that period of fifteen working days 156 applications bad been received, comprising 16 claims from men who had not previously approached the committee, and 140 applications from others who had done so. The Emergency Committee met on twelve occasions, and dealt with 51 of the 156 applications received, 105 claims being disposed of by the Applications Committee; whilst there were 55 applications still under action.- The total number of applications dealt with during the period under review, including those submitted to the Finance Com-. mittee, amounted to 169. The number of persons who called at the association's office during the period previously mentioned was 205. Of these 130 applied for direct and 75 for indirect assistance. There had been'no alteration in the general activities of the I committee, assistance differing widely

in description having been given to partially disabled soldiers, to others who were discharged fit and subsequently developed a war disability, to the widowed mothers and widows of soldiers who fell in action, and in other directions.

A report from tho Finance Committee showed that it had held ono ordinary and three emergency meetings since the executive met on 24th November. In addition to its ordinary function of controlling the financial affairs of the association, it had dealt with 13 applications for assistance by way of loans. Of these, three were old and ten Were new applications. The former were revised in connection with amendments to the original terms of repayment, the amount involved being £.500 and the unpaid balance £209 12s 9d. None of the new applications disclosed war disability, and were all declined accordingly. The sum involved amounted to £235. . -
