ALARM IN FRANCE
GERMAN ARMAMENTS
PARIS, 9th August. Reports from Berlin regarding the proposed reorganisation of the Eeiehswehr, including a strong reserve, are again perturbing French critics, who are alarmed at Germany's increasing national defence expenditure. It is pointed out that since 1924 the Army Budget has risen from 359,000,000 to 481,000,000 marks, and the Navy Bud. get from 99,000,000 to 220,000,000, It is contended that on the basis of the Peace Treaty the present military exponditure should not exceed 250,000,000 marks maximum annually, and > that on the Navy 113,000,000, It is declared that the great increase in military exenditure is only accountable by the assumption that'new projects have already been launched for Which large additional funds are required. It is also asked why Germany has a larger contingent of naval oadets than France, and why out of the total naval personnel o£ 14,914 the proportion should be 4979 officers and 9935 men.
