TRENTHAM NOTES

(By "Vedette.")

Weather conditions at Trentham this were a decided improvement on those of the city. The tracks, however, were quite rain-soaked. The course proper was available, and trainers whose horses required fast work for immediate engagements made use of it.

Joy Bird, Bronstell, and Kilperon came down from the six furlongs post on the straight course, running a useful half-mile, Joy Bird, who had the advantage of the weights, finishing in front. H. Telford takes the trio South on Monday night. Endorse, the rising two-year-old- filly by Paper Money from Epitaph, leaves for Sydney to-morrow by the Ulimaroa. She is to go into George Price's stable and will be taken across by H. Lowe. H. Telford has this filly very forward, and Price is fortunate in getting a ready-made Gimcraek Stakes candidate.

Quantum strode along, doing steady three-quarter pace work. The race he had at Trentham has brought him on well. He is to race at Eicearton, and goes South next Wednesday night. Indian Sage showed plenty of dash in a three-furlong sprint up the back in 41see. He cantered right round and then Bprinted' again, the second three furlongs taking 45sec. He looks well. Nadarino did .useful work. This pair will be taken South next Wednesday to race at the Grand National Meeting.

Prince Paladin and Treshain hit cut well in a three-furlong sprint up the back in 41see. They, together with Hokioi, are booked for Eicearton next Wednesday. Tresham may be ridden in the Winter Cup by P. M'Brearty. Vexatious and Cerf jumped away at the mile post on the course proper and went at a solid pace round to the winning post. Black Mint was not asked for anything strenuous, but ho looks well. This trio also go to Eicearton noxt Wednesday.

There is nothing amis 3 ■with Degage, and she went along freely in: her work this morning. She should be in s;reat order for the early spring' meetings'. Aro de Val and his half-brother- by Lackham are also going on the right way.

Passionate apparently' is thriving on his change at Trentham, and his small rider this morning had difficulty in holding him. Wild Pigeon went along very freely on the course proper, but was not cut against time. She is well forward and should be fit to race early. Grand Knight, after trotting and cantering, did two solid rounds on the course proper. He is still carrying a good deal of surplus flesh, but is fining down iv good style. Providing he stands up to the critical part of his preparation satisfactorily ho will make his reappearance in public in the Waifganui Guineas early in September. A. Goodman has threo rising tnree-year-olds in his team to exploit in maiden races next season. One is Dainty Ways, a bay filly by Arrowsmith from Dainty Step, who looks a likely sort. The others are Bing Boy, by Kilboy from Jiu Jitsu, and an. unnamed filly by Arrowsmith from La Paloma. Goodman aUo has in work a rising two-year-old filly by Winterbourne from Dainty Step.

Bonideer and Arrow Boy are booked to go to Sydnoy to-morrow by the Ulimaron. and will be taken over by A. D. Webster. Bonideer is destined for the pony meetings, and, with her smartness at the barrier and undoubted speed, she Bhould be a great proposition on the smaller pony courses.

A. Quinlivan leaves Trentham early next week for Porirua, where he will train in future. Wailong has done well under his charge. Quinlivan is receiving at the end of the week a three-year-old filly by Greyspear from Silver Beacon, so a half-sister to Star Shell.

The Trentham trainer J. Ayres injured an arm and shoulder recently, caused by a young horse he was leading on a hack becoming frightened and pulling back. The reins became entangled and Ayres was unablo to free himself. At present he is unable to attend to his duties. ,
