PROGRESS OF WORKS

At the monthly meeting of the Main Highways Board, over which the En-gineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department (Mr. F. W. Furkert), presided, the following statement of works carried out in the southern districts of the North Island during June was presented:—

_ Patea County Section.—Beeonstruction work is in hand between 6 miles 11 chains and 6\ miles 39 chains north of Patea.

Wanganui County Section.—A further 40 chains of top course metalling has been completed. Turakina Level Crossing Elimination. —The overbridge has been completed, and the approaches are in hand. Lepperton Junction-Hawera, via Opunake.—Pungareere Bridge: One abutment is almost complete, and the excavation for "the second is in hand Bulls-Taumai,unui.—Waimarino County section: 30 chains of top course metalling has been cai*ired out. .Stratford - Taumarunui. — Stratford County Section: A further 36 chains of metalling has been completed east of Toko. Whangamomona Section: A further 4« chains of formation has been completed.

■ Bangitatau East and Watershed roads. —Waitotara County Section- IS chains of this road has been reconstructed. Wanganui-Horopito: 24 chains of this highway has been reconstructed during the month. via Taranaki.— Ngahauranga Gorge: 26 chains of widening has been completed. Johnsonville Tawa Hat: 21 chains of this section has been widened to 24ft Tawa Flat-Porirua: 12 chains of C IS section has been widened to 24ft and a further 24 chains is in hand. WaikanaeManukau: The- foundation of this section is being consolidated for a distance of 4 miles 10 chains in preparation for bituminous grouting; (50 chains of bituminous penetration has been completed north of Otaki, and formation work is in hand towards- Manakau. SansonBangitikei Biver Bridge: Beconstruetioa work is in hand and about 2 miles ot the foundation course is being completed in preparation for bituminous sealing. <*

.Levin-Palmerston North via Shannon —Shannon-Makerua: Formation work is in hand between Tokomaru Stream and county boundary. Foxton-Shannon.— Manawatu Biver Bridge: 79 chains of railway track has been laid between the old Manawatu Biver Bridge and the new. bridge site and 1921 cubic yards of filling has been placed m the approach bank on the Shannoa side.

Awahuri-Maii£aweka via Kr-.bolton. —Kiwitea County Section: Several bad points are being removed between Kimboiton and Pecp-o'-Day. via Wairarapa.— ■Akatarawa Junction-Summit RinmtakaThe metalling on this section has been completed between 3, mile 69 chains and 2 miles 23 chains. Widening is in hand at 1 mile 20 chains and 3 miles ?0 chains, and 10 chains of widening has been completed between 3 miles 30 chains arid 3 miles 40 chains. ' ' Summit Bimutaka-Featherston Borough. Boundary.—4 chains of this section have been widened near the 8-mile peg. Masterton County Section: 50 chains of road south of the Ruamananga Bridge is being widened. Pahiatua-Pongaroa, — Ngaturi Eiver Bridge: The deck of this bridge has been completed between piers B and C and boxing is iv p] aee between piers A and B ready for the concrete.
