OTAGO WIN WELL
SOUTHLAND OUTCLASSED
INVEKCAKGILIj, 27Hi July. The inter-provincial Kugby match, Otago v. Southland was played to-day in (lull weather, in the presence of a ]'art;o crowd. The ground was heavy after rain overnight and throughout the niorninOtago won by 27 points to 6. Southland had the better of matters in the iirst spell, which was more solid than brilliant. The young Otago pack wore down Southland in the second spell and gave their backs plenty of the ball, with the result that the home team were kept on the defence practically throughout. Lhe Otago backs handled well, and had too much pace for the opposition, who seldom showed out. Sonntag played a line game for Otago, and led his forwards in grand style. He was ably supported by Stevens, Hore, and Collett. The whole of the rearguard played well, with Holden, Mitchell, and Lindsay the shining lights. Hazlett was conspicuous throughout for Southland, and was ably supported by M'Kenzie and Bird. Diack .was the star ■ among the backs and Johnson did some good work. Otago's score was made up of tries by Finlayson, Stevens, Stewart (2), Lindsay and Mitchell (2), Lindsay converted three of the tries. For Southland Nicholson kicked a great goal from iive yards inside halfway, and Johnson scored a try.
